Mattel Electronics - The Power of He-Man video game - cover

Masters of the Universe: The Power of He-Man is a 1983 platform-action video game, developed by Mattel Electronics and based on the Masters of the Universe franchise. It was released for the Atari 2600 and Intellivision.

Three Versions[]

There's three versions of the game. The Intellivision, Atari and Colecovision. The three versions look drastically different, but the game play is similar.

The Intellivision was made by Mattel, so the ads say "Shown on Intellivision, with SuperGraphics. Game varies by system.", because Mattel wanted people to buy their game console. But the game was also available for the Atari and the Colecovision.

Plot[]

He-Man flies a Wind Raider to Castle Grayskull so he can defeat Skeletor.

Gameplay[]

First Section[]

Fly the Wind Raider, avoiding the attacks of villains below. Drop bombs on them. Reach Castle Grayskull.

In the Intellivision version, the individual villains are blue and supposed to be Skeletor. In the other versions the villains come in multiple colors so could be any villain available in 1984. Three deaths in this section end the game.

Second Section[]

He-Man must get through barriers sent at him by Skeletor. In the Atari version this looks a bit like a Tron block out wall. In the other two versions this is fireballs, which is something he's avoiding in the first section too.

He-Man can block attacks with his sword. But getting hit by walls, fireballs or lasers(?) doesn't kill He-Man, only stuns him. Once you get past the barriers, you take on Skeletor. In the Atari version you just need to touch Skeletor. In the other versions you get into a sword fight with Skeletor. In the other versions you go through this three times. Mountains, Forest, Castle.

Game End[]

In the Atari version, when you defeat Skeletor, you get a Win Screen, before the game starts over at a more difficult skill level. In the other versions you chase Skeletor out and the game starts over at a more difficult skill level.
